Marquez beats Katsidis via TKO

Last night Juan Manuel Marquez defeated Michael Katsidis via TKO in round 9 to win the WBA Super Word Lightweight title as well as the WBO Lightweight title.
Marquez was caught by a vicious left that put him to the canvas in the third round, but after he recovered he dictated the pace of the fight and was able to keep Katsidis at bay through the use of his powerful and accurate jab. Marquez is no stranger to having to show off his strong chin; in his fight against Manny Pacquiao that was declared a draw he survived three first round knockdowns.

Overall Marquez out landed Katsidis 327 to 194, and in the ninth round the damage was too much for Katsidis to withstand and the referee called the fight.

In the post-fight press conference Marquez was quite vocal about wanting the trilogy fight with the eight-division champion Pacquiao. “Yes, he beat bigger fellows but they are all past their prime while I beat younger and stronger boxers like Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis,”
